States Masters Swimming (USMS) & Maui
Masters Swim Club (MMSC)
What
is Masters Swimming? Masters swimming is an organized program
of swimming for adults. Members participate in many ways ranging
from lap swimming for fitness to international competition.
Who
are the members? Anyone 19 and over can join Masters
swimming. United States Masters Swimming (USMS) has over 35,000 members,
a few who are in their 90's and 100's.
Where
is Masters Swimming? Everywhere in the U.S.! There
are over 450 local Masters Swim Clubs throughout the country.
Do
I have to compete? Everyone has his or her own reason
for belonging -- health, fitness, camaraderie, fun, the thrill of competition,
travel and coaching are but a few reasons for joining. About 30%
of Masters swimmers compete on a regular basis. There are a number
of opportunities to test your skill and conditioning, locally, nationally
and internationally. But if competing is not your style, there is
no need to feel pressured. Many Master swimmers are simply interested
in the regular routine of working out.
Are
workouts always organized? One of the greatest benefits of Masters
swimming is to be able to practice with an organized group of similar ability.
Each team or club has its own program. Some are highly structured
with set workouts and on-deck coaching, while other groups are very informal.
What
are the benefits of membership? Benefits can be measured in many ways.
When you join, you are automatically covered by the group's insurance (USMS)
which provides accident and liability insurance during all sanctioned workouts.
You will also receive SWIM Magazine which keeps you informed of the
organization's programs and happenings.
